Week 2

Dear Families,
We have an exciting year of learning ahead! Our first few weeks of school will be focused on building our classroom community, establishing routines, and procedures. Take a look at the photos below of students reading our new classroom books, playing math games, and getting to know each other through games and our All About Me bags.

Thank you for sending hats, water, healthy snacks and lunches, and your well rested children!

Our timetables have been revised, so please take a look at the Grade 1 schedule here on the blog.

Here is a peek at next week:

Literacy: Students will be reviewing alphabet letters names and sounds. Next week, students will review the letters: /s/, /a/, /t/ and /i/. Our sight words are I, we and it. We are beginning the year by building good reading and writing habits. We will establish rules and expectations for reading and writing, being independent learners in a partner setting as well as working with partners to become stronger readers and writers.

Handwriting: Handwriting in first grade is where students solidify their handwriting grip. We are working on building stronger fine motor skills to help us with our grip and writing stamina. We are also working on correct letter formation. "Top to bottom, left to right."  You can help your child build stronger fine motor skills by using tongs at meal times, asking them to cut paper into confetti into a container, or squeezing a soft ball in their hand.

Math: We will continue counting, reviewing the concept of a number, and reading and writing numerals. Our first unit focuses on Counting and Comparing.

Social Studies/Science:  Students will continue developing a stronger classroom community and learning how to be a good student and friend.  We will spend time thinking of our classroom expectations and rules.

PE: An AISB athletic uniform is available and optional for grade 1 students. During swimming, students will need a swim suit, towel, and flip flops both days. If your child is unable to take part in PE on a particular day, please send an email to Mr. Ba at and cc me

Thank you in advance for all the support you will provide during the school year! A successful year is when students, teachers, and parents work together in partnerships. I am here to discuss any concerns or answer any questions. You may contact me at anytime. I look forward to a wonderful year together!

Our First Week of School!

Thank you to those families who have brought in supplies! If you need help with supplies, please see Oumou or Mariam in the front office.

Dear Grade 1 Parents,

You might have noticed your children having paint on their clothes on Friday. They did a great job in making painted paper for future use in the art room. Unfortunately it became a bit messy. Please know that the paint washes out quite easily.
Thank you for your understanding,
Simone Kamminga

Our First Day of Grade One!

Welcome to the new school year!

My name is Julie Gibson and I will be teaching Grade 1. This is my third year at AISB after teaching at schools in Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Iraq and California. I have taught IB, British National, and Common Core/AERO curricula. This year, we are lucky to have Mr. Sam joining us during literacy and Ms. Irama joining us during Math.

The primary method of communication with families will be through our class blog, so please be sure to view the posts when you receive them and check the blog regularly. I will share information about student learning, the curriculum, photographs, recommendations about how you can assist your child’s learning, and more. I am thrilled to partner with you through the year in your child’s journey of learning.

Our non-swimming PE days are Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Please ensure your child wears appropriate clothing including athletic shoes. For swimming later on, your child will need a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and flip-flops.

Mondays are our library days. Students will bring home reading folders and classroom books in a few weeks.

Please send a hat to school along with a reusable water bottled, both labeled with your child’s name.

If you have areas of expertise and would like to come into class to share anything, please contact me. You may also contact me to read a book to our class as a Mystery Reader anytime through the year. We love Mystery Readers! More information about Mystery Readers is coming.

Below is our current timetable without swimming. A few photos from the day have also been posted.

Looking forward to a great year ahead!

Ms. Julie
